Up to the Challenge

This is my blog and it's for the world to see
I write poems for people, what they request of me
It can be about anything, I really do not mind
I just enjoy the challenge, and the chance to rhyme.
It started back in grade school, a poem about Mountain Dew
From there it just exploded and now it's what I do
I have written tons of these since I was very young
At times they can be serious, I love when they are fun
You may not believe me but about anything I can write
So throw a challenge on the board, I'll post it to my site!

At a Coffee Shop

While applying for jobs, I have spent a countless amount of time in coffee shops.  I have enjoyed the smell of coffee brewing and the feeling I am not alone in the stress of accomplishing my goals.  Taking a step back to stop and, in this case, smell the coffee beans, I've come to notice and appreciate the people that surround me while I sit here.  Too often we judge someone without looking closely at ourselves to find maybe we are the ones that are or should be judged.

Walking into a coffee shop, at first glance, one may see
People on their computers sipping their coffee
However the longer you sit there, the image, it may change
You notice more the people and how, to you, they may seem strange
There’s the coffee sipping “hipster” with his headphones in
Head bobbing to his music, oblivious to an onlookers grin
The noisy chatter of a high school girl, and the gossip she must give
At the next table is an elderly couple, who find it offensive
A businessman walks in sporting his fancy suit
And the sweat trickles from the young man who is in a job pursuit
There is a younger couple who more than occasionally flirt
And the people behind the counter are laughing as they work
And as I said before strange are the people you see here and there
But then again who was the strange person who took the time to stare?

Home From the Dorms

College - non stop parties, an endless sleepover, drinking, dancing... doing whatever the hell you want, quite possibly, for the first time in your life.  I remember those dorm rooms, the good and the bad, and no matter how much I wouldn't admit it back then, it was good to come home every now and then.
This was a request from a girl who just completed her first year of college and asked me to write about the comforts of home.

In college we become independent and free -
As well as broke, stressed, tired and hungry
And while we enjoy the freedom to be on our own,
There is something to say about the comforts of home
Where laundry is free and is actually clean
And mom's home-cooked meals taste like 5-star cuisine.
The bathroom is shared by only a few
The toilet paper is stocked, the towels are too
You don't have to buy Phillips or Keystone
Dad will slip you a 20 and a beer of his own.
Then, after your parents fill the gas to your car,
Off you go again, back to college you are.
Parties and music, staying up all night
Until next time parents, it was a delight!

Ode to a Red Pen

Have you ever noticed when it comes to homework or a quick note-to-self we pick up our black or blue pen? In our pool of writing utensils found in our cups, purse, desk or wherever you may choose to keep yours, never do we select the red one.  Red is subjected to the torment of error correction or, on the opposite end of the scale, the lovey dovey doodles of me + you.  Well I say no more!
Here is the request someone made about a red pen.

Errors of sorts - spelling, grammar, the minor details
Hearts sketched with the initials of male and females
We use you to show love or to constructively criticize
In anger we'll use you, yet overall you are wise
Oh red pen there is so much we can do with you -
Yet you remain unwanted, second to black or blue
Who says we cannot complete a paper in red ink?
It's not like you're trying to be yellow or pink
And why must your marks cause some to pout?
All you're really trying to do, is help out.
No one's up for the job like you dear red pen
You're definitely the toughest pen there has been
Dearest red pen, I think you have endlessly proved
You have bigger balls then the black and the blue
